Despite white wines being the most consumed on the Island of Elba, it is the red wine that best tells the story of this land, primarily based on Sangiovese, a grape variety that represents the winemaking tradition of Tuscany. The red wine from the Island of Elba is made from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot grapes sourced from clay-iron-rich soils in flat areas. Early harvesting for the Merlot and mid-September for the Sangiovese ensures optimal ripeness. The vinification process in steel involves a maceration of about seven days. The result is a young wine with an intense ruby red color, characterized by fruity Sangiovese aromas followed by notes of aromatic herbs and violet on the nose. On the palate, it stands out for its good balance between freshness and tannins, with a pleasant savory note typical of island wines in the finish. It pairs perfectly with dishes such as chicken cacciatore and traditional soups, including those based on fish from Elban cuisine.
